RED BULL STREET STYLE UK WINNER CROWNED IN CAMDEN
Saturday night saw the UK final of Red Bull Street Style, featuring 16 of the top freestylers in the country, take place in a wet and windy Camden Town. Set in the stunning St Michael’s Church, 17 year old Cornish lad Andrew Henderson rose above the competition to take the honours and book his ticket to South Africa for the Red Bull Street Style World Final in April 2010.
In an incredible final, watched by 200 people, Henderson took on last year’s reigning champion John Whetton for a place in South Africa. With the pressure mounting on both players, Henderson produced a number of jaw dropping combos just at the right time to win over the judges.
Among the judges was Dutch footballing legend Edgar Davids, who presented Henderson with the winner’s trophy. Known for his superb skill on the pitch, Davids said: “The UK final was incredible, the best so far and the standard in the final was spectacular.”
Henderson, from Truro in Cornwall, was overcome with joy as he was mobbed by his fellow freestylers after the final, saying: “This is the best day of my life, I’ve had such an amazing night. The final in South Africa is going to be a real challenge but I’m up for it”
Completing the judges panel was Soccer AM’s very own freestyler, Rocket Long and Arnaud ‘Séan’ Garnier, last year’s Red Bull Street Style World Champion.
Following on from the huge success of last year’s final in Sao Paulo, there will be 57 countries from around the globe sending Street Stylers to compete in Cape Town in April next year. In the UK, there were four regional heats in London, Newcastle, Nottingham and Bristol building up to Saturdays final.
