ANGELO STORMS OF ROME, NEW YORK TAKES U.S. RED BULL STREET STYLE TITLE
Freestyle Soccer Winner to Represent the U.S. at World Finals in Cape Town
Atlanta, GA (February 20, 2010) – Red Bull Street Style crowned its U.S. winner, Angelo Storms of Rome, New York, on Saturday, February 20th at Atlanta’s very own Center Stage. More than 400 spectators filled the concert venue to cheer on 12 of the nation’s best freestyle soccer players who ranged in age from 18 to 32. The contestants stepped up to the challenge and juggled and entertained the crowd to the beats of celebrity DJ, World Famous
G-Mack.
“To win the U.S. final is a dream!” says Angelo Storms. “I can’t wait to face the best in the world at South Africa. I’ve been training for six years for this and it’s like a dream come true. To be one of the best in the world and represent my country, it’s unbelievable.”
Angelo is no stranger to Red Bull Street Style. Even though this is only the second year of the competition series, he made it to the U.S. finals last year and even made the trip up to Canada and won a spot to compete in the Toronto finals there. But it was Angelo’s versatility, superior ball control and creativity that helped him win over the judges and capture the title today. “From the get go he came out and we were impressed with everything he did,” says judge, Frank Gonzalez. “I loved his creativity.”
Capturing second place was Georgia local, Erick Farfan, who put up a solid fight in the round with his intense attention to detail and crowd winning personality, while Miami native John Fredy Moncada’s witty style and original moves earned him third place.
RATE MY MOVES
Former Major League Soccer player Josh Keller and Jill Robbins, Executive Director of Soccer in the Streets, judged the player’s control with the ball during their moves, while local B-girl, Severe, judged the contestants style with their ability to incorporate the element of dance, and New York Red Bulls Street Team member, Frank Gonzalez, rated the player’s overall creativity.
The rules for Red Bull Street Style’s U.S. Finals are simple as 1-2-3 - one soccer ball, two players, and three minutes to wow the judges and the crowd. Players in each “duel” demonstrate their most impressive tricks in this single elimination, traditional bracket style competition format.
CAPE TOWN BOUND
Not only did Angelo take the US title, but now he advances to represent his country at the Red Bull Street Style World Finals in Cape Town, South Africa from April 26 – 28th. He will face more than 50 country finalists from across the globe to battle it out for the ultimate title – Red Bull Street Style World Champion.
