The Red Bull Street Style 2009 ambassadors, Chris Njokwana and Mzu Madela, are still on the road in the Eastern Cape; and the crowds just keep showing up. “The people are what it’s all about. I love the people,” Chris explains.
“Sometimes they are a bit shy, but we encourage them and they come up and show us what they can do.” And there are a lot of fast learners in the crowd, “Some of the tricks they’re seeing for the first time,” Mzu tells us, “We’re teaching them.”
Mzu, a Cape Town Red Bull Street Style finalist for a 2009, and Chris’ fellow ambassador, is enjoying being the new face on the scene. “People haven’t heard of me. It’s great to be able to show my skills and build my profile.” Chris adds in that Mzu is a great inspiration for the crowds, “They see Mzu and I and they realise ordinary people can succeed at freestyle soccer. It inspires them.”
The roadshow has been a great success and it’s almost time for the freestyle soccer stars of the Eastern Cape to prove themselves at the regional qualifier. Chris and Mzu are excited but also a bit nervous, “We’ve taught them new tricks, and done our best to inspire them. Now we just wait for the qualifier.” Don’t miss the Eastern Cape Qualifier Tournament on the 26th September at Mdantsane City.
