With the KZN qualifier around the corner, we caught up with Red Bull Street Style Ambassador, Chris Njokwana, to find out how the last few days of roadshows have gone.
With the KZN qualifier around the corner, we caught up with Red Bull Street Style Ambassador, Chris Njokwana, to find out how the last few days of roadshows have gone.
“Things are going well. We hit the townships and man, the response was phenomenal. Often in the suburban areas, there is more interest in watching than in actually taking part, but in the townships people were going crazy; they were all keen to participate.”
“I was happy to see that there was a lot of talent in the townships. The tricks have their own spin and flavour, different to the malls and city centre. There were a lot of tricks on the ground, instead of keeping the ball up in the air. But there is absolutely talent there.”
Chris was excited to tell us about one participant in particular, “There was this girl, hey hey hey! She can pull the tricks; she is very good. I told her she has to be at the qualifier on Sunday, I hope she pitches. If she does, she will be the first girl to take part in a South African qualifier! Man, that would be awesome.”
With only one more week of roadshows to go in Gauteng, Chris is having mixed emotions about things coming to an end, “I’m tired. By the end of each day, my legs are aching, so a chance to relax will be cool; but there are so many places and people that I’m going to miss. The roadshows have been crazy. Good times.”
Chris is still travelling with his friend and fellow freestyler, General. General is planning on taking part in the KZN qualifier on Sunday at the Gateway Mall so he has been keeping an eye on the talent, “There are two guys coming to the qualifier who are very good.” We ask him what he thinks his chances are like, “Yoh, yoh, yoh. All I can say is, I don’t know if I’ll win but I know I’ll do my best and I know I’ll have a good time!”
